Food & Beverages Policy

Food

We take the health and safety of our members very seriously, so when listing allowed food related items, make sure to follow our policy.

The following and similar food items are not allowed:

  • Unpasteurized dairy products (except cheese that follows government guidelines)
  • Unpasteurized fruit or vegetable juice
  • Wild mushroom (except for morel and shitake mushrooms)
  • Ackee fruit or seeds
  • Expired food
  • Government assistance benefits that can be used for food
  • Fresh food
  • Frozen food 
  • Non-labeled food 

When listing food items that are allowed, sellers must:

  • Ensure food items are properly packaged and stored safely
  • Clearly state the expiration date in the item description
  • State how perishable items will be delivered, and ensure they are delivered to the buyer before the expiration date
  • Upload the clear Food label photos. The food labeling is required for most prepared foods, such as breads, cereals, canned, snacks, desserts, drinks, etc. (nutrition-facts-label for selling to US, Food labeling rules for selling to EU countries)

USA: Imported food products are subject to FDA inspection when offered for import at U.S. ports of entry. FDA may detain shipments of products offered for import if the shipments are found not to be in compliance with U.S. requirements. Both imported and domestically-produced food must meet the same legal requirements in the United States.

EU GENERAL OBLIGATIONS OF FOOD TRADE: 

The general requirements of food law: 

  1. Food shall not be placed on the market if it is unsafe. 
  2. Food shall be deemed to be unsafe if it is considered to be: 

         (a) injurious to health; 

         (b) unfit for human consumption.

Beverages & Alcohol

We take the health and safety of our members very seriously, so when listing allowed food related items, make sure to follow our policy.

The following and similar Beverages (including alcohol) are not allowed:

  • Non-labeled drinks
  • Expired drinks

When listing Beverages (including alcohol) that are allowed, sellers must:

  • Ensure beverages items are properly packaged and stored safely
  • Clearly state the expiration date in the item description
  • State how perishable items will be delivered, and ensure they are delivered to the buyer before the expiration date
  • Upload the clear beverage label photos. The food labeling is required for drinks, etc. (Current Good Manufacturing Practices for selling to US)
  • Alcohol must contain an age-limit claim: Individuals must be at least 21 years of age to purchase alcohol, or use any site functionality related to alcohol.
  • Alcohol purchased on Shoplazza may not be resold and may only be used for a Customer's internal consumption. 

USA: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures that carbonated soft drinks are safe, sanitary, and honestly labeled. In fact, FDA has established Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs) for carbonated soft drinks, which describe the basic steps manufacturers and distributors must follow to make sure carbonated soft drinks are safe.

Note for phenylalanine: Diet carbonated soft drinks containing phenylalanine must also include the statement, “PHENYLKETONURICS: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE,” for individuals who suffer from phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder in which the body can’t process that amino acid. If the phenylalanine level gets too high in these individuals, it can damage the brain.

Note for Benzene: For bottled water, FDA has adopted the US Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant level of 5 parts per billion (ppb) for drinking water, as a quality standard.

Alcohol 

USA: Alcohol purchased on Shoplazza may not be resold and may only be used for a Customer's internal consumption. Individuals must be at least 21 years of age to purchase alcohol, or use any site functionality related to alcohol.

EU: Distilled beverages (also called liquors or spirit drinks) are alcoholic drinks produced by distilling (i.e., concentrating by distillation) ethanol produced by means of fermenting grain, fruit, or vegetables. E.g. rum, whisky, brandy, vodka.

  • There is no requirement for alcoholic beverages to list their ingredients

Alcohol must comply with the presentation and labeling requirements:

  • Raw material used to produce the ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin
  • A maturation period or age may only be specified in the description, presentation or labeling of a spirit drink where it refers to the youngest alcoholic component and provided that the spirit drink was aged under revenue supervision or supervision affording equivalent guarantees.
  • Legal names of spirit drinks
  • Certain substances or products causing allergies or intolerances
  • Alcohol energy value shall be calculated;
